PSYC 300. Practicum in Psychology
This course provides sophomore and junior psychology majors an opportunity to gain practical experience working in a social service agency while learning about the many ways that psychology is applied in these settings.
Students volunteer for a minimum of six hours per week in an agency of their choice. Selection of sites is arranged in discussion with the practicum supervisor; however, students are encouraged to explore possible sites on their own prior to meeting with the practicum supervisor. In addition to their volunteer duties, students are expected to attend class meetings in which students discuss their experiences, listen to guest speakers from agencies in the community, learn about ethical issues of social service, as well as discuss careers in this area.

PSYC 300 is also a service learning course. The goal of service learning courses is to:
- Enhance student learning by joining theory with experience and thought and action
- Build community capacity by drawing on the strengths of both the community and university as students provide meaningful service to organizations outside the university
- Provide students with opportunity for reflection on what they do and see such that students can examine their role and commitment to social justice in society.
Students in PSYC 300 will examine these issues in the context of group discussions and class presentations.
Another goal of PSYC 300 is to prepare students for a more intensive experience in the community should they so choose. Participation in an internship course is expected to be a more meaningful experience for the student after taking PSYC 300. Moreover, by developing skills and knowledge through participation in PSYC 300, students will be able to provide better service to community agencies as part of their internship.
NOTE: Students must obtain permission from the practicum supervisor prior to registering for PSYC 300. The Psychology Department secretary should be consulted for information about PSYC 300 during the registration period for the semester in which the student wishes to enroll.
