Bren O. Murphy has taught numerous communication courses in her 21 years at Loyola. She received the Sujack Award for teaching excellence in 1996 and has been recognized by the Gannon Scholars for outstanding leadership. Most recently s
he has taught Ethics and Communication and Issues in Feminism for Women’s Studies and Gender Studies.
Dr. Murphy co-produced What's goin' on, a radio documentary about high school students and hate speech, with fellow professor Craig Kois. She is also working on a paper about nuns as pop culture icons. In the past, Dr. Murphy has co-authored texts such as Cultural Hegemony in the United States with Lee Artz, also of Loyola University Chicago.
Outside Loyola, Dr. Murphy has held office in many professional organizations including the National Association of Women's Studies and the National Communication Association.
Dr. Murphy and her husband Chris Murphy, Director of Loyola University Ministry, have two teenage children. The Murphy family spent a year at the Rome Center from 1998-99. Dr. Murphy taught, Chris served as campus chaplain and the children attended Italian middle school.
Dr. Murphy earned her Ph.D. in Communication Studies from Northwestern University, Evanston, Ill.
