  • Wherever possible, link the work of faculty holding endowed positions to the work of Centers of Excellence.

TACTIC 2

Promote annual and bi-annual interdisciplinary conferences, fora on research, and speakers’ series with special emphasis on the life sciences and health care, ethics and social justice, and children and families.

Actions and Directions

  • Establish a moving three-year schedule of major conferences to be organized by Centers of Excellence such that each Center organizes one event every three years.
  • Establish the sponsorship/financial support of the major conferences as an ongoing Advancement priority. (Estimated cost: $2,500,000 to endowment)
  • Each Center of Excellence will sponsor one major event, research symposium, or public speaker series per year, plus internal conferences and events for LUC faculty and students.

TACTIC 3

Refine Centers’ mission statements to give special emphasis to the advancement of social justice, community and/or global engagement and awareness, and student engagement.

Actions and Directions

  • The faculty administrator responsible for oversight of University Centers will compile an annual listing of ways in which Centers address social justice, community and/ or global engagement and awareness, and student engagement.
  • Connect the University’s immersion program for faculty and staff to the University’s Centers of Excellence, increasing the value of these experiences and improving the potential for collaborative research and the advancement of our understanding of social justice.

TACTIC 4

Engage our alumni and other University partners in the work of our University Centers of Excellence.

Actions and Directions

  • Create external boards of advisors for each of our University Centers of Excellence.
  • Link Centers’ outreach activity to community needs and external sponsorship opportunities.
  • All Centers will have a financial resource plan for securing adequate non-tuition-based resources to sustain Center activities.
  • Establish endowment targets for the Center for Urban Environmental Research and Policy and the Center for Science and Math Education to be achieved by 2015. (Estimated cost: $20,000,000 to endowment)

TACTIC 5

Increase annual external grant funding in support of research by 50 percent during the next five years.

Actions and Directions

  • Secure external funding for basic and applied research related to the work of every University Center of Excellence.
  • The lakeside and health sciences chief academic officers will establish numerical targets for their units for grant submission and grant funding from NSF and NIH.
  • The CFO and chief academic officers will establish indirect funding policies that create incentives for securing external grant funding, support maintenance of the research infrastructure, and provide seed money for new efforts to secure external funding.
