DAVID YELLEN
DEAN AND PROFESSOR OF LAW
Message from the dean
Dear Graduates and Friends:
I
n a challenging economic environment for law schools and law
students, Loyola University Chicago School of Law is pleased
with the progress and momentum we have sustained. We
continue to attract bright and talented students, and most of
our graduates are finding good jobs in a tough economy.
Dedicated to the highest standards of teaching, research, service,
and policy development, our interdisciplinary Centers of Excellence
and specialty programs continue to lead the way in several important
areas of law.
The School of Law is responding to new demands of the job
market in innovative ways that are likely to benefit our students
for years to come. We have significantly enhanced experiential
learning opportunities to meet growing demand for practice-ready
law graduates. The law school’s traditional curricular offerings have
expanded to include a rich diversity of live client clinics, externships,
simulation courses, and other hands-on initiatives to help students
learn competencies necessary for success. Our students continue to
take top honors in student competitions in which they hone their oral
and written advocacy skills.
Reflecting the geographic diversity of our students, many of
whom cannot attend law school full time, Loyola continues to lead
in online legal education, offering master of jurisprudence degree
programs in children’s law and policy, health law, and business and
corporate governance law, and a master of laws degree program in
health law.
Our faculty’s expanding international presence and expertise in
emerging and increasingly significant areas of the law have provided
unique and interesting global learning opportunities for our students.
As the practice of law becomes increasingly transnational, these
international perspectives are reflected in our curricula abroad and
here in Chicago.
The addition of renowned scholars Zelda Harris, director of the
Dan K. Webb Center for Advocacy, and James Gathii, Loyola’s Wing-Tat
Lee Chair in International Law, has strengthened our reputation for
faculty excellence. This fall, we are pleased to welcome John Dehn,
who most recently served as a senior fellow at West Point Center for
the Rule of Law.
I hope you will enjoy reading about these and other recent
accomplishments in this report. As always, our achievements would
not be possible without the loyal support of our graduates and
friends. Thank you for all you do for Loyola law.
