Throughout the year, the Philip H. Corboy Law Center is host to a variety of cutting-edge
conferences, symposia, and special lectures. Bringing together academics, students, and
practitioners to share insights on today’s top legal issues, these events add to the body of
legal knowledge and build key connections among the School of Law and the Chicago,
national, and international legal communities.

US Secretary of Housing and Urban Development Shaun Donovan delivered the
keynote address at Loyola’s National Mortgage Settlement Conference.

Emily Benfer,
Clinical Professor and Director, Health Justice Project
In recognition of her contributions to health care access, poverty law, and legislative advocacy, Benfer was named a Chicago
40 Under 40 Rising Star in July by the
National Law Journal.
She continues to speak nationally on topics related to public
interest and social justice.

symposium explored international and
domestic sex trafficking as well as labor
trafficking, and discussed actions required
to curb trafficking’s growth.

INSTITUTE SYMPOSIUM
“Early Childhood Education
for the Future”
Cosponsored by the Illinois State Board
of Education and the Illinois Resource
Center/Early Childhood Professional
Development, this symposium discussed
components involved in creating a
high-quality early childhood education
program and offered legal and financial
strategies for building a seamless system
between preschool and school. Presenters
included Bela Moté, vice president of
Educare Development, The Ounce of
Prevention Fund; and Sara Watson,
director and cofounder of ReadyNation
and executive vice president for National
Partnerships, America’s Promise Alliance.

PROTECTION CONFERENCE
“Behavioral Economics and
Investor Protection”
Nobel Prize-winning psychologist
and best-selling author Daniel
Kahneman delivered the keynote
address at this conference, which
discussed application of behavioral
economics to critical aspects of
securities fraud litigation.
NATIONAL MORTGAGE
SETTLEMENT CONFERENCE
Key figures in the historic $50 billion
settlement, including Hon. Shaun
Donovan, US Secretary of Housing
& Urban Development, discussed
the housing market collapse, the
intricate path to the national mortgage
settlement, and the independent monitor
established to oversee the terms of
the agreement. The conference was
cosponsored by Loyola’s Institute for
Consumer Protection and Institute for
Consumer Antitrust Studies.
RACE AND THE LAW SYMPOSIUM
“Breaking the Class Ceiling:
Advancing Diversity in the
Legal Profession”
Moderated by Romeo Quinto Jr. (JD ’00),
partner at Morgan Lewis, the symposium
examined workforce disparities and
how they affect the legal practice in
general. Panelists discussed how minority
practitioners in their respective fields
have worked to overcome barriers and
become successful lawyers.

ANTITRUST STUDIES CONFERENCE
“Brands, Competition and
the Law”
Deborah Majorus, general counsel for
Procter & Gamble and former chair of
the Federal Trade Commission, and other
participants reflected upon the legal,
business, and economic understanding
of brands, and discussed specific issues
raised by branding in 21st-century
business competition. The conference
was cosponsored by the Centre for Law,
Economics and Society at University
College London.

“International Cooperation:
A View from the Trenches”
Presenters including Patricia Brink,
director of civil enforcement, Antitrust
Division, US Department of Justice,
discussed comparative approaches

Chicago’s award-winning Writers Theatre

“Debt Collection in a Modern Economy”
Ira Rheingold, executive director
and general counsel of the National
Association of Consumer Advocates,
keynoted this symposium examining
current trends and practices within the

collectors and consumers.
SPECIAL DEBATE
“Should the International
Criminal Court Try President
Uhuru Kenyatta of Kenya?”
Jide Okechuku Nzelibe, professor of
law and associate dean for faculty
affairs at Northwestern University Law
School, and Charles Jalloh, professor
of law at the University of Pittsburgh
School of Law, debated whether Kenya’s
President Kenyatta should be tried by the
International Criminal Court for crimes
against humanity. The lively debate was
moderated by Professor James Gathii.
