The Center for Science and math Education represents a
cooperative effort between Loyola's School of Education
and College of Arts and Sciences. Dedicated to
improving the quality of science and math education in
area schools, the Center and its faculty have developed
a number of programs to achieve this goal.
The need for qualified science and math teachers is
great and will grow over the next ten years. Loyola's
Center for Science and Math Education has developed a
series of courses
designed for middle school science and math teachers
seeking endorsement in these areas. Because of
the generosity of a number of agnecies that are
supporting our work, we can offer tuition
subsidies for selected teachers taking these courses.
Please contact us about this. Loyola also works
closely with the Office of Math and Science of the
Chicago Public Schools (CPS), serving as the
implementation site for SEPUP,
(Science Education for Public Understanding Program)
a research based
curriculum chosen by CPS for 7th and 8th grade science
classes. In addition to working with inservice
teachers, the Center is working with faculty in the
School of Education and the College's Natural Science
Department to develop a new undergraduate major in
Science Education. We are in the processing of
developing and offering the first courses in this new
major.
