Schools and districts can bolster their discipline reform efforts with resources developed by an interdisciplinary team of attorneys, school psychologists, policy advocates and community partners. Created by the Transforming School Discipline Collaborative (TSDC) and the Education Law and Policy Institute at Loyola University Chicago School of Law, these resources include:
Model Code of Conduct
TSDC's Model Code of Conduct is an editable document school administrators can use to develop their student code of conduct so that it (1) is compliant with recent changes to Illinois law and (2) advances the goal of fairness and equity in the discipline process. Our research-based strategies are designed to keep students in school, fully engaged and on track to graduate. In addition to the editable template, there is an annotated version of the Model Student Code of Conduct together with a self-assessment checklist designed to support school district compliance with the new law.
Administrators’ Academy–Implementing School Discipline Reform: Strategies for Systemic Change
Illinois’ transformative new school discipline law (Public Act 99-0456, often referred to as “SB 100”), which requires schools to eliminate the broad-based use of zero tolerance policies and to make substantial efforts to implement alternatives to exclusionary discipline, goes into effect on September 15, 2016. TSDC has developed an Administrators’ Academy that assists schools to examine their disciplinary policies and practices to ensure that they align with the law. The full-day training incorporates TSDC’s Model Code of Conduct and other tools and is presented by an interdisciplinary team that includes a school psychologist, attorney, and restorative justice trainer. Review information and upcoming Academy dates.
