Loyola University Chicago

Following is a list of software applications available to students at Loyola University Chicago. Some are on the Loyola Computer Network and are accessible at any Loyola computer center. Others are available only in the LLRC, Damen Hall 335, Lake Shore Campus.

• Microsoft Word for Mac - LLRC, Macintosh. Word processor that provides spelling, grammar check, and visual keyboard. It functions for the following languages: Arabic, Chinese, French, German, Greek, Hebrew, Hindi, Italian, Japanese, Polish, Russian, Spanish, and Turkish. These features can be accessed via the pull-down menu near the upper right-hand corner of the screen (labeled with a flag icon).
• Microsoft Word XP - On the LUC Network under Loyola Software, Common Desktop Applications. Word processor that allows typing and checking spelling in a variety of foreign languages. Computers in the LLRC are set up to type in any of the languages taught by the Modern Languages and Literatures Department. You can select a language from the Language Bar, found near the lower right-hand corner of the screen.

• On-Screen Keyboard - On any PC. From the Start Menu, go to Programs, Accessories, Accessibility and select On-Screen Keyboard. Virtual keyboard that displays the key layout for any given language and allows inputting specific characters using the mouse.
• World Languages (101 Languages of the World) - LLRC, CD-ROM, Macintosh. Beginning level lessons for dozens of languages, including all languages taught by the department and many others, such as Portugese, Swahili, and Tagolog. Ideal for those with travel plans!

• Arabic Tutor - LLRC, PC. From the Start Menu, go to Programs and select "The Arabic Tutor." Introductory program which teaches Arabic script and pronunciation.
• Language Now (Transparent Language) - LLRC, CD-ROM, PC. Focus is on reading practice using assorted texts ("Titles"). Users can click on any word and get a translation, grammatical info., and hear the word pronounced. Activities include games to practice vocabulary and self-recording to practice pronunciation. • Integrated Chinese Multimedia Companion - LLRC, CD-ROM, Macintosh or PC. Accompanies Integrated Chinese textbook (for introductory Chinese). A set of multimedia exercises in reading, listening, speaking, and writing.
• Professional Interactive Chinese - LLRC, CD-ROM, PC. Teaches Mandarin Chinese through exercises in vocabulary, grammar, phrases, phonics, and games.
• Power Chinese - LLRC, PC. Teaches character stroke order, basic phrases and pronunciation.
• Language Now (Transparent Language) - LLRC, CD-ROM, Macintosh, or PC. Focus is on reading practice using assorted texts ("Titles"). Users can click on any word and get a translation, grammatical info., and hear the word pronounced. Activities include games to practice vocabulary and self-recording to practice pronunciation. • French Deluxe/ Talk To Me - LLRC, CD-ROM, PC only, recommended for FREN 101-104. An immersion course with over 300 hours of progressive instruction teaching vocabulary, grammar, and pronunciation.
• Elementary French Exercises (ELFE) - Now here, online, nearly 800 interactive comprehensive grammar exercises for all aspects of French grammar, organized by grammatical topic.
• Système D - On the LUC Network under Loyola Software, Academic Applications, Language Applications. Word processor add-on developed for French students. Provides dictionary, vocabulary assistance, spell check and grammar information. 1st-3rd year. Students must have own disk to save documents.
• GrammarTutor French - LLRC, PC Only. Teaches vocabulary, conjugation, grammar, and pronunciation through fun simple games.
• Language Now (Transparent Language) - LLRC, CD-ROM, Macintosh, or PC. Focus is on reading practice using assorted texts ("Titles"). • French Tense Tutor - LLRC, Macintosh. Users choose a verb tense and then practice conjugating verbs based on sentences read by a native speaker. Ideal for 2nd-3rd year students.
• French Pronunciation Tutor - LLRC, Macintosh. Pronunciation tutorial with recording feature. All levels.
• Language Diction and Phonix Toolkit - LLRC, Macintosh. Tutorial and review. Teaches pronunciation and international phonetic alphabet. Allows users to record their own voices and compare with model speaker. All levels.
• Le Petit Robert - LLRC, CD-ROM, Macintosh or PC. Comprehensive French dictionary with 60,000 words.

• Franz Kafka - LLRC, CD-ROM, PC (DOS boot). Several Kafka stories on CD-ROM, with some interactive features.

• Hebrew World - LLRC, CD-ROM, Macintosh. Includes reading, writing, speaking, learning numbers and greetings, tutorials, and testing. This multimedia program is for beginners.
• Instant Immersion Hebrew - LLRC, CD-ROM, PC Only. Focuses on beginner hebrew using games, recording, and listening (assumes student already knows Hebrew Alphabet)

• Hindi Guru - LLRC, CD-ROM, PC. This program guides you through animated, real-life situations on a trip to India. It includes conversation, games, and reference material.

• Welcome to Japan - LLRC, CD-ROM, Macintosh and PC. Children's program, in English, designed to introduce the geography, government, economy and culture of Japan.

• Enciclopedia del cine español - LLRC, CD-ROM, PC. A reference work on Spanish film, including film clips, inormation on directors, actors, etc.
• Spanish Pronunciation Tutor - LLRC, Macintosh. Pronunciation tutorial with recording feature. All levels.
