International Diplomacy in Turbulent Times
Edin Hajdarpasic, Associate Professor of History and Rule of Law Institute Research Fellow at Loyola University Chicago, will give a lecture on the Dayton Agreement. Amidst Communism's collapse in the late 1980s, nationalist forces in Yugoslavia targeted the multiethnic state of Bosnia-Herzegovina to violently “unmix” diverse communities. The resulting war and genocide ended with American-led intervention, culminating in the 1995 Dayton Peace Agreement based on complex mechanisms of ethnic power-sharing. Many foreign observers have touted Dayton as a “success story” of peace-building while downplaying the problems Bosnians continue to face. This talk will reflect on broader insights into international affairs offered by post-Dayton Bosnia (hosted and co-sponsored by the Roberta Buffett Institute for Global Affairs at Northwestern University).
