Orientation for New Tutors

Information on Orientation Sessions

Regularly Scheduled Orientation Sessions for Loyola students who wish to tutor in the Fall Semester 2025 will be held online on Tuesday, September 2nd, Wednesday, September 3rd, and Thursday September 4th at 7 p.m.  For more specific information, please email literacy@luc.edu. You can also register for the orientation session by emailing the same address.

The regularly scheduled required orientation program for tutors new to the Center is given on three separate evenings in fall and spring during the second week of the semester. The same material is presented on each evening. If you have never tutored at the Literacy Center before, you must attend one of the three. Once you have completed the orientation, you may tutor any evening/s you wish, as arranged with the LCLC managers and director.

The orientation session for tutors new to the Center is essential. It will help you understand the LC's format and culture and you will be able to determine if this is the service project that you wish to join.  The presenters will give you the information you need about being an effective tutor and meeting the needs of our adult learners.  We are a tutoring center.  We do not offer classes.  We have native speakers and multi-lingual learners of English coming to us.  We ask the learners what they need and design an individual course of study to help each one meet those needs.  It can be preparation for a GED, English conversation, improved writing or reading skills,  or preparation for the citizenship exam. Once you are trained, you will find that there is still more you need to know—about grammar, about pronunciation, about helping your learner with specific questions. To assist you, there are always two trained staff members present to answer your questions as well as the director. At the LCLC you are never alone; there are staff and resources to help you whenever you have questions.

All orientation sessions run from 7 p.m. to approximately 9:30 p.m online on Zoom.  Email literacy@luc.edu for specific information.

If you have tutored for the LCLC before, you do not have to attend an orientation session. Just let us know which night/s you wish  to tutor by e-mailing  literacy@luc.edu.

Do you want to register for orientation?  You can e-mail  for more information at literacy@luc.edu

If you are a Loyola student who has missed our regular orientation sessions, please email literacy@luc.edu and ask for an appointment for a "flash orientation." We offer these by appointment only at a time convenient for you and us.
