Painting, at its core, is a process used to incite the illusion of something, whether it is volume, depth, light, or just sensation. But ultimately, what you see on the canvas is just material put together in order to fool the eye and make us believe that the illusion is real. Bamboozle presents three artists interested in different strategies to challenge the notion of “what you see is what you get”. By referencing today’s societal values and its relationship to the digital world, theories of camouflage and Gestalt psychology, and the purpose of painting, Erin Hayden, Jordan Martins and Alex Herzog’s taunting works invite us to pay attention or be bamboozled.
