How do I get more information?

If you would like more information about our graduate programs, please complete the form for Bioethics & Health Policy or Healthcare Mission Leadership.

What background is required for our graduate program?

BIOETHICS:  Admission will be based on demonstrated ability in related professional and academic experience. Typical applicants to the Master's and Doctoral degree programs should have an advanced academic (PhD, MA, MS) or professional degree (MD, DO, DDS, PharmD, JD, BSN, MSN, MSW, STD, DMin, MPH, etc) and work experience in a related profession.  Applicants who do not have a graduate or professional degree but are simultaneously pursuing another graduate or professional degree may submit MCAT, LSAT, or GMAT scores in lieu of the GRE (not required).  Applicants who have a bachelor’s degree and are not currently pursuing other professional studies are encouraged to apply to the certificate program. The certificate program may be taken as a stand-alone certificate; others pursue the certificate as a point of entry into the MA program (for more information about the certificate, please see below).

HEALTHCARE MISSION LEADERSHIP: Healthcare Mission Leadership applicants can have an undergraduate or graduate degree.

Transcripts for all undergraduate and graduate work are required for admission.  Applicants ordinarily must have achieved a grade point average of at least 3.0 on a 4.0 scale (3.67 or higher for doctoral program) in their previous courses of study.  For more information on Graduate School admission policies, go HERE.

What material will I need to apply for the Master of Arts or Certificate programs?

To apply for admission to the graduate programs, the following documents are required from domestic applicants:

  • A completed online admission application
  • Official transcripts from all undergraduate and graduate institutions attended
  • Three letters of recommendation
  • Statement of Purpose (this is a brief, one page statement that explains your interest in this program. Why are you applying? How will you integrate this degree into your career?)
  • Writing Sample (this should be a piece of writing that shows us you are able to write clearly and think critically. It may be something written for an academic course, something you've published, or even something written for work)

What material will I need to apply for the doctoral program?

To apply for admission to the doctoral program, the following documents are required from domestic applicants:

  • A completed online admission application.
  • Official transcripts, only supplemental transcripts required for our graduates.
  • Three letters of recommendation (graduates of Loyola's MA in Bioethics or HCML programs require one letter; that letter must be from a source external from the program)
  • Statement of Purpose (this is a brief, one page statement that explains your interest in this program. Why are you applying? How will you integrate this degree into your career?)
  • Writing Sample

Applicants to the doctoral program should possess the following:

  • Completion of a Master's degree in bioethics with a GPA of 3.67 or higher.
  • Exceptional candidates who have an advanced degree in another discipline may be considered for admission. An applicant who lacks an advanced degree in bioethics should make a strong case for their suitability for the doctoral program. An applicant who lacks any background in bioethics should consider starting in the master's program with an eye toward eventually matriculating into the doctoral program.
  • Evidence of scholarly ability (e.g. publication in a peer-reviewed journal). Because peer-reviewed publication is a major outcome of the doctoral program, evidence of writing ability at a publishable level is a major admission criterion.
  • Evidence of ability to participate in practical ethics activities (e.g. participation on an ethics committee, institutional review board, conflict of interest committee or other similar activity, conducting ethics consultations, providing ethics leadership)

What about the Graduate Certificate option?

In addition to the Master of Arts degrees (M.A.) and professional doctorate degree (D.Bioethics) programs, we also offer graduate certificate options in Healthcare Mission Leadership, Clinical Ethics, Bioethics & Health Policy and Catholic Healthcare Ethics.  Students that wish to matriculate into the M.A. program may apply certificate credit toward the M.A. degree.  Certificate applicants are not required to possess a graduate or professional degree.  Please use the online application form noted above.

Do I need to maintain continuous registration?

The professional doctorate, master's and certificate programs require continuous registration (excluding summer). This means that students who matriculate into this program should plan on registering for at least one course a semester. The program cannot accommodate students who are not able to maintain continuous registration. Before applying, please make sure that you are able to commit the necessary amount of time and resources to fulfill the demands of this program.

What if I want to take only one course?

Applicants interested in enrolling in one course may do so by applying as a non-degree seeking student. Applicants must have at least a bachelor's degree in order to apply as such. Please use the online application form noted above. To apply for admission as a Non-Degree Seeking student, applicants are required to submit one set of official transcripts from all undergraduate and graduate institutions attended.

Where should I send my application materials?

Graduate and Professional Enrollment Management, Loyola University Chicago, 820 N. Michigan Avenue, Lewis Towers Suite 1200, Chicago, IL 60611 (if you have any questions regarding the application, please e-mail: gradapp@luc.edu).

What do I need to do if I am an international applicant?

International applicants must have all transcripts evaluated and must provide the Graduate School Administration office with the evaluation.  All international applicants must submit a score from the TOEFL exam. Please see Loyola University Chicago for details HERE.
