History
The Loyola University Chicago Burn and Shock Trauma Research Institute (BSTRI) officially opened in 1991. With the leadership of Richard L. Gamelli, M.D., F.A.C.P., as the Founding Director of the Institute and Chief of the Burn Unit, the institute has drawn together the leading investigators and experts in patient care, basic sciences, clinical research and education. These investigators have been studying the body’s response to life threatening injuries to develop new strategies for preventing and healing such injuries.
The BSTRI continues to grow and benefit from the leadership of co-directors Richard Gonzalez, M.D. and Mashkoor Choudhry, Ph.D.
Many of BSTRI trainees trained in the past two decades are now the leading investigators in their respective fields at various institutions all over the United States. Today, with its strong interdisciplinary research program, participation in a multitude of clinical trials and commitment to education the BSTRI is one of the nation’s most productive research institutes in the field of burn and trauma. Over this period, the major research in the institute has been supported primarily by the National Institutes of Health and Department of Defense through various grants mechanisms and by funds from the Dr. Ralph and Marian C. Falk Medical Research Trust. The BSTRI remains committed to the training of future generations of scientists and clinicians.
