Training for Surgery Residents
The Burn and Shock Trauma Research Institute provides research training for clinicians from many different specialties, including surgery, anesthesiology, otolaryngology, neonatology, dentistry, pulmonology/critical care medicine. The Institute research programs are applicable to many additional specialties, as well. Each trainee works under the guidance of a primary mentor, but has the benefit of participation in all Institute activities. Funding for trainee salaries and research comes from extramural grants from the NIH, Department of Defense and private foundation grants, or from our NIH Training Grants.
Along with spending time in the lab conducting clinical, translational and basic science research projects, many of the research students pursue an advanced degree during their two years of dedicated research time. The majority of the residents work toward an MS in Clinical Research and some pursue a MS in Public Health (MPH).
