Loyola Chicago chapter of Alpha Sigma Nu inducts 159 new members, welcomes 3 honorary members

October 15, 2023

The Loyola Chicago chapter of Alpha Sigma Nu, the honor society of Jesuit colleges and universities, inducted 159 new members on October 1, including 45 juniors, 45 seniors, and 69 graduate and professional students from the 11 schools and the Institute of Pastoral Studies. In order to receive an invitation to Alpha Sigma Nu, students must be rising juniors or seniors, or have completed half of their graduate/professional degree requirements, and be in the top 15% of their class. Only 5% of each class may be inducted each year. The three tenets of Alpha Sigma Nu are Scholarship, Loyalty, and Service. Candidates are nominated and recommended by their respective college, school, or institute, and recommendations are not only based on students' academic achievements, but also on their loyalty to the ideals of Jesuit education and their engagement in service.

This year, the Loyola Chicago chapter also recognized three individuals with honorary membership: Dr. Markeda Newell, Interim Dean of the School of Education and acting Vice Provost for Faculty Affairs; Fr. Stephen Schloesser, S.J., professor of history in the College of Arts and Sciences, and Mr. Antonio Ortiz, MBA '05, President of Cristo Rey Jesuit High School (Chicago, IL) and Loyola Trustee. Ortiz delivered the ceremony's keynote address, welcoming new members to the honor society and encouraging new members to a lifetime pursuit of Ignatian spirituality and service, inspired by the society's tenets of scholarship, loyalty, and service.

In addition to welcoming its new members, the Loyola Chicago chapter awarded the annual Alpha Sigma Nu Scholarship to Nikki Tsolakidis of the College of Arts and Sciences. And, the Rev. Ronald J. Ferguson, S.J. Award for Most Outstanding New Inductee, sponsored by Loyola's Jesuit Community, was awarded to Fatima Akili of the Stritch School of Medicine.

Alpha Sigma Nu is the Jesuit Honor Society with chapters at the 27 Jesuit colleges and universities in the United States and five abroad. It is the only honor society permitted to bear the name Jesuit. To learn more about Alpha Sigma Nu, visit our website here
