Gift of Sight Mission Brings Hope to Guatemala

Loyola Medicine Ophthalmology partnered with HF Healthcare Services for the 2026 Vision Bridge Gift of Sight Mission, held February 21-28 at Nasir Hospital in Guatemala. The week-long humanitarian mission brought together ophthalmologists, fellows, residents, medical students, and volunteers to provide sight-restoring care for underserved patients.

During the mission, the team completed 88 cataract and pterygium surgeries, helping restore vision while delivering comprehensive preoperative, surgical, and postoperative care. In addition to patient care, participants collaborated with local healthcare professionals and contributed to research focused on global ophthalmology and health disparities.

The mission also included an Academic Night, where U.S. and Guatemalan clinicians shared clinical experiences and discussed the Vision Bridge initiative, which aims to strengthen sustainable eye care through education, collaboration, and long-term partnerships.

Through global outreach initiatives like Vision Bridge, Loyola Medicine Ophthalmology remains committed to advancing patient care, medical education, research, and international collaboration while expanding access to quality eye care for underserved communities.
