Washington Internships

Would you like to spend a semester or summer in the nation's capital working as a congressional intern in the world of government and politics?

If so, then you may be interested in applying to Loyola University's Washington Semester. Through an agreement with Marquette University's Les Aspin Center for Government, Loyola undergraduates may participate in an internship program in Washington, DC.

Opportunities are available for students to gain experience by working in the offices of members of congress, administrative agencies, or other placements.

Interns register at Loyola for six credit hours of a supervised internship in addition to courses in Political Science and Arts, for a total of 18 academic credits during the semester.  The internship program is also offered during the summer (6 credit hours).  Courses are comparable to ours and carry Loyola credit.  Students take classes at the Aspin Center, just three blocks from the Capitol. Apartment housing is available at the Aspin Center.

Loyola has been sponsoring a Washington Semester Program for over 15 years and more than 170 Loyola students have participated thus far. They report that it has been a very exciting and valuable experience, and a helpful way to clarify and advance their career goals.

To be eligible for this unique internship opportunity, students should have junior or senior standing at the time they attend the Institute and a GPA of at least 2.75.  Openings are limited.

The application deadline for students applying for the 2010 Summer Session or the 2010 Fall Semester is February 26, 2010.  Because space in the program is limited, earlier applications are encouraged.

Interested students should complete and download an Application Form. For information and help with the application process, please contact Dr. Alan Gitelson in the Department of Political Science at agitels@luc.edu.

Deliver completed application materials to Professor Gitelson, Political Science Department, Damen Hall 960, LSC. Do not mail directly to the Aspin Center. Ask two professors to e-mail a recommendation on your behalf to Dr. Gitelson at agitels@luc.edu.

This is an exchange program with Marquette University. Students remain enrolled at Loyola while studying at Marquette's Aspin Center. Students pay Loyola University tuition. Students with Loyola tuition scholarships may apply those scholarships to their tuition billing. Housing and program fees are approximately $3,750 for the Fall Semester and $1600 for the Summer Sessions.  These fees are paid to the Aspin Center. Food and all other expenses are the responsibility of each student.

Students who are accepted into the semester or summer sessions are required to provide a nonrefundable $500 deposit, which will be credited to the student's Loyola tuition for the program.
