Monarch Initiatives

Monarch students posed with IL Latine legislators and advocates in the IL state captiol with trees in the background.

Monarch Initiatives is a campus wide initiative designed to foster Rambler community, build awareness on issues related to migrant experiences (including, but not limited to, undocumented, DACA, immigrant, refugee, asylum-seeking, and/or international students), bolster on-campus support for and the inclusion of these individuals.

History

In 2013, Loyola University Chicago’s Stritch School of Medicine made history by changing its policy to allow DACA students to apply, removing the requirement of U.S. citizenship or permanent residency, making it the first medical school in the nation to do so. Since then, Loyola University Chicago has remained true to its Jesuit values by continuing its evolution in migrant student support through many initiatives, including Monarch Initiatives university-wide reach.

Events

All of our events are open to all Loyola students! Follow us on Instagram, join our group on LUCommunity, and subscribe to our newsletter to stay up to date with our upcoming events.

United and Proud (UP)

United and Proud (UP) - UP is a brave space for students. This student group meets regularly during the academic year and is co-led by the Monarch Initiatives (MI) Interns. This space is designed to build solidarity, support, and joy. If you are looking for a space that will center and celebrate your resilience, please email jthomas39@luc.edu to get connected to this space.

UndocuWeek

Each Spring the Monarch Team will host a celebratory week that uplifts stories of resilience within the migrant community. The Monarch Team collaborates with various campus partners and student organizations to cultivate community, provide resources, and celebrate success.

Share the Dream Ally Trainings

The CSIB Director and Monarch Interns facilitate Share the Dream Ally Trainings to deepen awareness and commitment to supporting migrant students on-campus and throughout the Chicago area. Upon completing the training, participants receive a placard that recognizes them as allies and as points of support for migrant students on campus.
