MOSAIC Cultural Initiatives
MOSAIC Initiatives foster a sense of belonging, pride, and empowerment for students at Loyola University Chicago by centering identity, community, and access. We are committed to affirming the lived experiences of our student population through intentional programming, holistic support, and inclusive outreach. Rooted in care, justice, and collaboration, MOSAIC helps students map their stories, build meaningful connections, and thrive.
History
Historically, the Loyola Chicago student body has always been involved in political, social, and institutional action, guided by Catholic Social Teachings. Dating as far back as post-WWII, Loyola’s student body has made a point to challenge, cultivate, and create spaces for change. This culture is threaded throughout Loyola’s history, as MOSAIC is the continuation of the racial justice work students began in 2020 and before, uplifting the many voices and experiences that make up the mosaic that it Loyola’s cultural identity. Through critical cultural programming centering various identities, MOSAIC aims to continue the work began by our students of yesteryear with the goal of fostering, cultivating, and celebrating spaces of cultural diversity.
Mission
We believe that identity is a journey. Our work centers community building, cultural pride, holistic wellness, and advocacy while holding space for the complexities and intersections of race, gender, sexuality, class, and more. MOSAIC is rooted in joy, reflection, and truth telling. Through meaningful programming and outreach, students are invited to deepen their self-understanding, strengthen peer connections, and feel a stronger sense of belonging at Loyola.
Vision
MOSAIC Initiatives envision a Loyola where students can navigate their academic and personal journeys with confidence, grounded in community, cultural affirmation, and purpose. Through programs that explore who we are, where we’ve been, and where we belong, MOSAIC serves as a guiding force in shaping a more inclusive and connected university experience.

MOSAIC @ the MET
MOSAIC @ the MET serves as the official kickoff to the MOSAIC community each year. Rooted in joy, reflection, and truth-telling, this event invites students to begin the year in celebration of themselves and one another. Inspired by the creativity and cultural significance of the Met Gala, MOSAIC puts its own spin on the experience by selecting an annual theme that reflects the conversations, values, and aspirations that will guide our community throughout the year. Students are encouraged to wear cultural attire or clothing that speaks to the theme, their identities, and the stories they carry with them. Together, we celebrate culture, creativity, and the power of showing up authentically in community.
MOSAIC Breaks Bread
MOSAIC Breaks Bread is an opportunity to gather in community, share a meal, and reflect on the deeper meaning of gratitude, connection, and collective care. As we approach the Thanksgiving season, this gathering invites students to decolonize the practice of Thanksgiving and critically examine dominant narratives while honoring the traditions, histories, and resilience of our communities. Through food, storytelling, laughter, and dialogue, MOSAIC Breaks Bread creates space for relationship-building, coalition-building, and celebration across identities and experiences.
Monthly Cultural Conversations
Monthly Cultural Conversations create opportunities for students to engage in meaningful dialogue about topics impacting our communities and the world around us. These conversations may explore issues such as gentrification and tourism through the lens of Bad Bunny's Debí Tirar Más Fotos, navigating BlaQueer identity, unpacking the impact of the model minority myth, and other timely topics that invite reflection, learning, and growth. Grounded in curiosity, care, and community, these conversations provide space to share experiences, learn from one another, and build solidarity across communities.
Cultural History Month Celebrations
Throughout the year, MOSAIC honors and celebrates the histories, cultures, contributions, and resilience of historically marginalized communities through Cultural History Month programming. From Hispanic Heritage Month and Black History Month to APIDA Heritage Month and Indigenous Peoples' Day, these celebrations create opportunities to learn, connect, celebrate, and reflect. Through educational programs, community gatherings, performances, speakers, and cultural showcases, students are invited to deepen their understanding of diverse communities while celebrating the richness of their own identities and experiences.
End-of-Year Cultural Graduation Celebrations
Join us as we celebrate the accomplishments, resilience, and journeys of our graduating students through the Sankofa Celebration, APIDA Celebration, and Latinx Familia Celebration. These identity-affirming ceremonies recognize the significance of earning a degree while honoring the families, communities, cultures, and experiences that have supported students along the way. Together, we celebrate not only academic achievement, but the stories, sacrifices, and collective victories that make each graduate's journey uniquely meaningful.
