Saturday of Service at Senn Park: The Tom Sawyer Project

On the morning of August 24th, over 100 freshman students from the University made their way to Senn Park High School for the annual Saturday of Service event.

As part of the university’s Welcome Week activities, Loyola freshmen are invited to participate in a community service project to both familiarize new students with the Jesuit mission and identity of Loyola while also providing them with an opportunity to interact with local residents from the Lake Shore Campus’ home neighborhoods, Rogers Park and Edgewater.

For this year’s event, Loyola University’s Center for Service and Action and Office of Community Relations partnered with the Edgewater Environmental Sustainability Project (EESP) to plan a city beautification fence-painting project. Working alongside our partners at EESP, our eager students set out to scrape and paint the 90-foot wrought iron fence that surrounds Chicago Park District Senn Play-lot Park, located on 5800 block of Ridge Ave.

Despite a great deal of elbow-grease from our hardworking freshman, there is still painting to do to complete the project! Interested volunteers who want to help complete this fence-painting project should please sign up here: http://www.signupgenius.com/go/60B0F45A4AF23A13-thetom
