Maryam Amouamouha, PhD

Assistant Professor


Dr. Maryam Amouamouha is an Assistant Professor of Environmental Engineering at Loyola University Chicago. Her research focuses on developing innovative and sustainable solutions for water and wastewater treatment, with an emphasis on membrane separation technologies, biochemical process design and optimization, resource recovery, and greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions.
Prior to joining Loyola, Dr. Amouamouha was a postdoctoral scholar at Northwestern University, where she worked on developing a user-friendly geospatial database of water and wastewater treatment facilities, including information on treatment technologies, energy use, and carbon intensity. She earned her Ph.D. in Chemical and Biological Engineering from South Dakota School of Mines & Technology in 2022 and holds a Ph.D. in Environmental Engineering from Shahid Beheshti University, awarded in 2018.
In addition to her academic research, Dr. Amouamouha is a co-owner of AMBER Aqua LLC, a water and wastewater technology company. Through AMBER Aqua, she participated in the NSF I-Corps program and conducted extensive customer discovery to evaluate the needs and market potential for innovative water and wastewater treatment technologies. She has also participated in several entrepreneurship and innovation programs and has received recognition in business plan competitions, including the South Dakota Governor’s Giant Vision competition.
