Human-Centered Teaching in an Age of Innovation: Artificial Intelligence in Transformative Learning Environments
The August 14, 2024, Focus on Teaching and Learning (FOTL) Conference theme was Human-Centered Teaching in an Age of Innovation: Artificial Intelligence in Transformative Learning Environments. With the partnership of several faculty and staff from around the university, we compiled nine presentations around the theme of generative artificial intelligence and its impact on teaching. Please peruse resources and recordings from each session below.
Opening Session/Keynote Speech Resources
This keynote address explored how personal and professional values inform choices about technology use and classroom policies and practices. The address also examined how to support students in their use and understanding of artificial intelligence.

Session Description: This workshop incorporated work from the current cohort of the Dean Brackley SJ Faculty Fellowship for Vocational Discernment and discussed bringing vocational discernment into the classroom across a variety of disciplines, with the hope of humanizing the classroom and enabling the rich process in which students can think deeply about their greatest hopes.

Session Description: This workshop session built upon the recent work done by faculty under the "Humanizing STEM Education: Navigating Future Challenges through Integrated Instruction" grant by the National Endowment for the Humanities. In the workshop, pairs of humanities and STEM faculty presented on the challenges and successes of their interdisciplinary course preparation.

Session Description: This workshop provided a foundational understanding of AI, detailed how to organize and run a capstone course using AI, and concluded with an interactive lab for hands-on training.

Session Description: This session presented pedagogical perspectives and strategies from writing intensive instructors hailing from a number of different fields. The presenters focused on how to negotiate issues of academic integrity and other challenges presented by generative AI while engaging students in robust writing instruction and practice.
