J-1 Intern
The J-1 "Student Intern" subcategory allows universities to issue Form DS-2019 to foreign students currently enrolled and pursuing a degree at a postsecondary academic institution outside the United States. The students can then apply for a J-1 visa in the intern category.
Student interns may participate in a student internship program at Loyola University Chicago for up to 12 months for each degree/major. They must work a minimum of 32 hours a week and only 20% can be clerical. The internship must be the primary purpose of their visit to the US and that the intern may not be involved in clinical or patient care. The internship can be paid or unpaid. You may visit the DOS website at http://j1visa.state.gov/programs/intern or check the NAFSA: Association of International Educators summary of regulatory information (J Student Intern Practice Advisory).
To host a J-1 intern the hosting department must complete and return the following forms to the Office of International Programs:
- Fill out the attached (Request for DS-2019 for J-1 intern)
- Have prospective intern fill out the attached (J-1 Student Intern Information) form
- Complete the (Form DS-7002) internship Placement Plan. Pages 1 and 2 of this form must be completed by the host professor, after discussing the internship plans with the prospective intern. After both pages are completed, the form must be signed by the host professor* (in the line marked “Supervisor’s Signature”) and by the intern (on the line marked “Trainee/Intern Signature”). A fill-able version of this form is available at http://www.state.gov/documents/organization/84240.pdf
Also, departments are required to:
- Supervise this intern, and assist him or her in finding appropriate housing for their stay and in becoming oriented to the Loyola University Chicago community.
- Provide International Student and Scholar Services with a copy of required evaluation(s) of intern.
NOTE: A sponsor may outsource the management of its student intern program to a third party. However, use of third parties creates additional regulatory obligations. Departments should discuss this option in advance with the Office of International Programs.
