ASCOLA 5K Registrants
Thank you for registering for the first-ever ASCOLA 5K Run for Competition set for Sunday, June 29 at 8 AM. More people registered than I can comfortably host at my apartment so the run will go forward at a nearby location on the shores of Lake Michigan at the North Avenue Beach.
We will meet at the North Avenue Beach Boat House. The North Avenue beach is on the shore of Lake Shore approximately 2 kilometers north and east from the law school. The beach house itself is shaped like an ocean liner. It has portholes and upper decks like a real boat. It has bathrooms, drinking fountains, and places to drink and eat.
The North Avenue beach and boat house are on the east side of Jean Baptiste Du Sable Lake Shore Drive highway. There are walking entrances to the beach and an easy place for Ubers and taxis to stop. The easiest way to get to the beach is the underground pedestrian tunnel located a few steps north of an apartment building located at 1550 N. Lake Shore Dr. The beach and boat house are visible (east toward the water) once you walk through the tunnel and exit up the ramps into the park and can be found here on Google Maps. If you come by taxi or ride share, the boat house is visible from the drop off point. The second floor of the boat house is the Castaways Beach Club.
We will meet at the middle of the boat house on the west side away from the lake. Professor Max Huffman of the University of Indiana McKinney School of Law will lead the group heading south at approximately a nine minute per mile (5:40 minute per km) pace. I will take the group running north at approximately a 11 minute per mile (approximately 7 minutes per km) pace. Each run will run an out and back course along the lake with the finish back at the boat house for the medal presentation and group photo.
We will be sharing the running path with other walkers, runners, bikers, roller bladers etc. It is best if people run no more 2-3 across to leave room for others. For the most part runners and bikers are on separate paths but be aware of your surroundings.
Please feel free to run or walk at whatever pace you feel comfortable. Medals will be provided to all participants who can certify through technology (or the honor code) that they completed 5K and enjoyed the lakefront views of downtown and the near north side of the city. There will be water fountains available along the routes in both directions and public toilets and water fountains at the boat house. Drinks and light snacks should be available for purchase at the boat house, but I am not sure the exact hours when everything opens in late June.
The ASCOLA 5K run will take place rain or shine. We will only cancel in the event of forecasted extreme weather conditions and will do our best to announce any cancellations at the ASCOLA closing ceremony on Saturday afternoon.
