Summer Get On Track
The transition from high school to college can be challenging for many freshman students, and, as a result, some students may not have performed as well as expected during their first semester in college. The Summer Get On Track (SGOT) program provides eligible freshmen with a grant that covers tuition and fees for Summer Session courses to help them get back on track with their academic plans as they head into their sophomore year. It also provides access to academic advising and academic support resources to help students develop their academic skills. By taking one or two courses in the summer at Loyola and participating in academic support services, students will be able to make up course credit hours and develop academic skills that will help them get back on track with their academic plans.
Eligibility
To be eligible for this summer grant, freshman students must:
- Have been admitted as a new freshman in the most recent Fall semester
- Have completed (or attempted) at least 12 credit hours (full-time student) in the Fall semester of their freshman year
- Not have earned grades of C- or better in 15 or more credit hours in the Fall semester of their freshman year
- Have earned at least one D+, D, or F grade in the Fall semester of their freshman year
- Be enrolled as a full-time student in the Spring semester of their freshman year
- Be academically eligible to enroll at Loyola for the following Fall semester of their sophomore year. (At the end of the Spring semester of the freshman year, a student must be eligible to continue on into the following Fall semester to be eligible for the SGOT grant to cover summer school courses. Any changes to an academic record for the Fall semester or enrollment status for the Spring semester may affect a student’s eligibility for the SGOT grant; students should consult their primary academic advisor if their Fall semester academic record or Spring semester enrollment status changes.)
Benefits of the SGOT Program
The SGOT grant covers tuition and fees for:
- One 3-credit course (plus one 1-credit lab course, if needed) in Summer Session A (1-4 credits)
- One 3-credit course (plus one 1-credit lab course, if needed) in Summer Session B (1-4 credits)
- UNIV 112: Strategies for Learning course (1 credit), in either Summer Session A or Summer Session B
Eligible students are not required to take a course in both Summer Sessions to receive this benefit. Both online and in-person classes are offered each summer, and both types of classes are eligible for this program. The following fees are covered as part of this program: student development fee, technology fee, lab fee, and CTA U-Pass fee, if eligible. Pell grants, if applicable, will be applied first to tuition and fees, and Loyola will cover the rest.
In addition to the SGOT grant, participating students will have access to the following resources and services. These services as well as many others across the university are available to support students in making progress toward their Loyola degree:
- Individualized academic advising on course selection and academic planning
- UNIV 112: Strategies for Learning course (1 credit), which can be taken in Spring semester or during one of the Summer Sessions (A or B)
- Success Coaching
- Peer Tutoring
How to Enroll
Eligible students will receive an invitation via Loyola email to participate in the SGOT program. Students will then:
- Schedule an academic advising appointment their primary academic advisor via Navigate360 to discuss course selection for the Summer Session and to develop a plan for academic success during the Spring and Summer terms.
- Enroll in Summer Session courses when registration access opens in February.
- Utilize the various academic resources including Peer Tutoring, Success Coaching, and/or register to take UNIV 112: Strategies for Learning to enhance academic skills.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can I use this grant next summer instead of this summer? Or is it only for the summer after my freshman year?
The SGOT grant is only available for freshmen in the summer after their first year.
Can I use this tuition credit at my community college?
The SGOT grant applies to course work at Loyola. Both online and in-person classes will be offered this summer at Loyola, and both types of classes are eligible for this program.
Do I have to live on campus?
Students are not required to live on campus to participate in the SGOT program.
Do I have to take two courses, or can I only take one and have it covered?
The SGOT grant covers the tuition and fees for one course (plus a lab course, if needed) in Session A and/or one course (plus a lab course, if needed) in Session B, as well as the 1-credit UNIV 112. You are not required to take a course in both sessions to receive this benefit. You may choose to take one course and it will be covered by the SGOT grant.
Does the grant cover a class and a lab if there is a lab associated with the course?
Yes, the grant will cover a 1-credit lab course in addition to the 3-credit course in the same Summer Session. The SGOT grant covers tuition for:
- One course (plus one 1-credit lab course, if needed) in Summer Session A (1-4 credits);
- One course (plus one 1-credit lab course, if needed) in Summer Session B (1-4 credits); and/or
- UNIV 112 Strategies for Learning course (1 credit), in either Summer Session.
Does the grant cover housing and a meal plan if I apply to live in on-campus housing?
The SGOT grant covers tuition and fees for summer course work. If you decide to live in on-campus housing, you will be responsible for the cost of room and board.
Does the grant cover Loyola’s online courses?
Both online and in-person courses are eligible for this program.
If I take two 3-credit courses in the same Summer Session, will the grant cover tuition for both courses?
If you take two 3-credit courses in the same summer session (either Session A or Session B), only one of those courses will be covered by the grant, and you will be responsible for paying for the second course in the same session. Because the summer sessions are condensed courses, students may take one course in each session. The SGOT grant will cover the tuition and fees for one course in Session A and/or one course in Session B, as well as the 1-credit UNIV 112 course in either Session.
Is there a deadline for accepting the SGOT grant? Do I have to enroll now? When do I have to decide?
Although there is no deadline to accept the SGOT grant, we strongly advise students to enroll in Summer Session classes as soon as possible in order to ensure they have a seat in the courses they select with their academic advisor. There are deadlines for enrolling in Summer Session A and Summer Session B. Please review the academic semester calendars.
What fees are covered by the grant?
The following fees are covered as part of this program: student development fee; technology fee; lab fee (if applicable); and CTA U-Pass fee (if eligible). Please note: If you decide to live on campus, you will be responsible for the cost of room and board and any related housing fees.
Why does this grant only cover one class per Summer Session A or B?
Because the Summer Sessions condense 16 weeks of course content into 6 weeks, the SGOT grant covers one course in each Session A and Session B to encourage students to focus on a single course at a time during the condensed sessions. You are not required to take a course in both sessions to receive this benefit.
