she/her, Class of 2024, BS in Sociology
Where are you from? Chattanooga, Tennessee
What is your past service experience? At Loyola, I was a leader for Loyola4Chicago. Through my experience with CSA, I was lucky to learn at several different community sites and was welcomed as a member into each I visited! This experience allowed me the chance to explore diverse aspects of community work which was crucial to my growth as a college student. I now work full-time as an art instructor at a community site I was introduced to by L4C itself!
What do you like to do in your free time? I’m lucky to have a role where I am in close proximity to art and assist creative minds to make their own. However, through this work, it’s been important for me to recognize the value of making my own art too! I love to paint and have a newfound love of drawing with charcoal, aka finger-painting for adults.
Favorite L4C moments: One of my favorite moments as an L4C leader was watching an elementary-aged-boy convince his friend to give the book The Giving Tree a shot. The reluctant friend began the evening uninterested in the story or the act of analyzing stories. By the end of my reading aloud, he was hanging on my every word and had an animated discussion with his pal about it!
Why do you engage in the community? Quite simply, my life feels fuller when I let myself find community! It’s fulfilling to accept the vulnerability of needing and being needed by others. At the store once, I witnessed a mother offer another customer use of her phone, saying, “I might need help one day.” I try to pay empathy forward by remembering my own feeling of needing or seeking help as I engage with my community.
What advice would you give to an incoming college student at Loyola? Take advantage of all the resources that Loyola has to offer. You won’t realize how helpful they are until they’re gone!
What is your favorite place in Rogers Park? I will always love looking at the painted benches at the Loyola beach. There is so much creativity within the community.
