Where are you from?
Belleville, IL, a city in Southern Illinois
What do you like to do?
I love to read, hangout with friends, talk to family on the phone, watch Law & Order, and sit outside on my deck when it's sunny!
How are you involved in Community Service & Action?
Currently, I am a returning student leader for L4C, and the CSA student worker. Also, this past summer, I attended the National Jesuit Student Leadership Conference (NJSLC) in Ohio as a representative of CSA.
Why do you engage in the community?
I have always loved volunteering and helping others, so becoming a part of CSA was a top priority of mine at the beginning of my freshman year. Volunteering continuously allows me to become more comfortable within my community and get so much fulfillment from meeting new people and seeing parts of my community that I may have never seen or been a part of if not for volunteering.
What is one of your favorite stories from your community engagement experiences?
One of my favorite memories from my community engagement experiences is much of the time that I spent at Jordan elementary. The first semester of my sophomore year was my first experience as a L4C student leader, so that semester was already bound to stick in my memory, but the relationships that I was lucky to build with the students at Jordan made it even more memorable. I worked mainly with the 4th and 5th graders, helping with homework and such, and there was a particular group of students who struggled to stay focused on their work. After consistently working with the students though, it became so rewarding to see them begin focusing and solving homework problems on their own, while still being comfortable enough to ask questions or even joke around with me once the homework was finished. Even with the limited amount of time I was able to spend with them, I still feel so proud of what they were able to accomplish, and I hope they continue to learn, and enjoy it.
What is your favorite place on campus?
My favorite place to study or read on campus is probably the greenhouse lounge in Mundelein (if it’s not too busy).
What tips do you have for building and maintaining community in college?
Get involved early! I built a lot of my current community through events held at Loyola and by participating in dorm activities!
What advice would you give to an incoming student at Loyola?
Get out into the city! Even if it’s just to walk around, there are so many amazing spots in Chicago to visit! Though our campus here is beautiful, I sometimes found myself only venturing close by. I soon learned how important it is to explore the city and see all the beauty that Chicago has to offer!
