Meet Raven Milam: Bringing GIS and Environmental Science to SES

The School of Environmental Sustainability is excited to welcome Raven Jezell Milam, PhD, as a Teaching Assistant Professor of Geographic Information Systems (GIS). 

Originally from Michigan, Milam has lived in Chicago since 2022. She earned her PhD in Geography from Michigan State University in 2024 and brings expertise in geography, earth science, and physical geography, with a primary focus on GIS, to Loyola University Chicago. 

Through her teaching, Milam will guide students in using spatial data and technology to better understand the world. Her courses include Introduction to Geographic Information Systems, Advanced GIS Applications, Remote Sensing, and Python Programming for GIS. 

Milam’s research focuses on geomorphology and environmental change, particularly how cold, non-glacial processes shape landscapes. She has conducted fieldwork in Alaska, the Appalachian Highlands, and the southwestern shoreline of Lake Michigan, studying shoreline erosion, habitat loss, and shoreline management. 

Milam views GIS as a tool for exploring environmental systems and developing new insights. In her classes, she emphasizes practical, repeatable methods that enable students to apply GIS to their own interests and fields of study. 

With additional expertise in geomorphology, physical geography, cartography, remote sensing, and spatial analysis, Milam brings an interdisciplinary perspective to the school. She looks forward to helping students use spatial technologies to address environmental challenges.
