Experiential Learning

The School of Environmental Sustainability offers unique opportunities for students to learn through hands-on experience. The following immersive programs allow students to earn credits toward their degrees while gaining valuable hands-on experience.

Solutions to Environmental Problems (STEP)

Students in STEP courses explore critical environmental issues and develop projects that address real-world problems. Learn more.

Loyola University Retreat and Ecology Campus (LUREC) Courses

SES offers immersive three-week courses at the Loyola University Retreat and Ecology Campus (LUREC). The campus, located roughly 60 miles northwest of Chicago on 98 acres of prairies, savannas, woodlands, and wetlands, provides an ideal setting for hands-on learning in the field. Learn more

More Active Learning Opportunities

At SES, active, hands-on learning extends far beyond these for-credit programs. Students can participate in internships on and off campus, work on research projects, learn about sustainable food production through our urban agriculture program, or help turn used vegetable oil into fuel in our biodiesel lab. Active student organizations also provide avenues for building teamwork and leadership skills while taking action on vital sustainability issues. Together, these opportunities equip students with the real-world skills they need to tackle critical environmental problems.
