Zero Waste

Loyola is working to rethink waste across our campuses by reducing what we use, keeping valuable materials in circulation, and diverting waste from landfills. Through waste prevention, reuse, recycling, composting, and responsible materials management, we’re building a campus culture where everyone has a role to play in moving Loyola toward zero waste.

Recycling

Recycling is available throughout Loyola’s campuses, making it easy for students, faculty, and staff to keep common materials out of the landfill. Loyola also offers opportunities to recycle specialty items that can’t go in regular campus bins.

Composting

Loyola is turning food scraps and other organic materials into a resource through composting. Organic waste is collected from dining operations and other locations across campus, while programs like the Compost Bucket Program give students an opportunity to compost food scraps from their residence halls and apartments.

Zero Waste Events

Events of any size can generate a lot of waste, but thoughtful planning can make a difference. The Office of Sustainability works with departments and student organizations to reduce single-use materials, incorporate reuse, and plan for recycling and composting at events across campus.

Zero Waste Games

Loyola Athletics and the Office of Sustainability work together to reduce waste generated during events at Gentile Arena. Zero Waste Games pair recycling and composting infrastructure with student-led education to help fans properly sort their waste and increase diversion from landfill.

Think Green and Give

At the end of each academic year, Think Green & Give makes it easy for students moving out of campus residences to give their unwanted items a second life. Clothing, household goods, furniture, food, and other reusable materials are collected and donated to community partners, reducing waste while supporting communities throughout Chicago.
