Resources for Students

Academic Internships are a great opportunity for students to gain academic credit while experiencing hands on work in a wide variety of businesses and organizations, creating a trial run for possible career paths and options. 

At a glance… ALWAYS connected to an academic course, for which student must register (and pay) 10-15 hours/week on-site Student works for the entire semester (3+ months) or summer 100-150 hours total work Paid or unpaid Student has a clearly defined role at the organization Organization provides a mentor/supervisor for the intern Mentor/supervisor provides ongoing feedback to the intern FOCUS: pre-professional development and academic mastery in subject area

The staff of the Center for Experiential Learning helps students search for the right internship and connects them to organizations relevant to their course internship requirements.  CEL also sponsors and teaches a 3-credit, elective internship course (UNIV 390) for students who are interested in an internship experience not directly connected to one of Loyola's main academic programs.

Students are highly encouraged to search for available academic internship positions through Loyola's RamblerLink online job and internship posting system maintained by the Career Development Center in cooperation with CEL.  Students can use RamblerLink to search for posted academic internship positions, identify relevant agencies and employers, post resumes and other relevant documents, and apply for jobs and internships.

Searching for Internships

 Searching for an internship may seem hard but with good preperation and a focused search you will be starting your new internship in no time!  Just a few quick tips to get you started on your search:

• Brainstorm a few organizations, companies, or fields that you are interested in working in... this will give you a good starting point to work off of when completing your search 
• Start your search EARLY... some internships have application deadlines 6 months before the expected start date
• Know your work availability and the time frame you would like to work in... this will allow you to set a time frame for your search and allow you to confine your search to those internships that work with your schedule
• Have your resume and/or a cover letter reviewed by a Career Counselor from the Career Development Center periodically... this way you will be prepared to submit your resume whenever you find your dream internship
• Use the three great resources below to start your search... but also don't be afraid to use your friends and professors as contacts to reach out to prospective employers (use those contacts and social networks!)
• Finally, if you do have a dream organization or business in mind, reach out to them via a phone call or email to introduce yourself and to ask for any information about internship possibilities or general information about them... this way your name is out there and if any future opportunites come up you might be first in line for the position
