In an inspiring ceremony, Dr. Lisa Burkhart of the Loyola University Chicago Marcella Niehoff School of Nursing received the 2022 Faculty of the Year Award during the 2022 Faculty Convocation, held Sunday, September 18.

Burkhart began her career at the School of Nursing as an Assistant Professor in 2002 and was promoted to Associate Professor with tenure in 2009. In her letter of nomination, Marcella Niehoff School of Nursing Dean Lorna Finnegan wrote, “[Dr. Burkhart] is highly regarded for her work on spirituality, informatics, and mixed methods research to improve preventive care among veterans with spinal cord injury and other chronic conditions.”

Burkhart has been funded as principal investigator and co-investigator on multiple extramural research grants totaling over $2.6 million, and program grants totaling over $5.2 million, and is well represented in publications ranging from refereed journals, books, monographs, chapters, and multiple presentations. She has been recognized for her work with numerous awards.

“Dr. Burkhart . . . has an extraordinary gift as a teacher and mentor,” wrote Dean Finnegan. “Since joining the MNSON faculty in 2002, Dr. Burkhart has consistently integrated theory, research, and practice into her teaching and mentoring of undergraduate and graduate students.”

In her comments at the Faculty Convocation, Dr. Burkhart thanked the many mentors and role models in her career and the Loyola culture of “encouraging one’s vocation, asking the hard questions, and facilitating finding the answers. This happens through mentorship and role modeling in a diverse community of scholars, seeing God in all things, and working to expand knowledge in the service of humanity through learning, justice, and faith.”

“I thank you all for creating this amazing place,” she concluded.
