Mariana Bessa Ribeiro

Assistant Professor of Economics

Mariana Bessa Ribeiro is an assistant professor of economics at the Quinlan School of Business at Loyola University Chicago. Her primary fields are macroeconomics, monetary economics, and finance, with applications to economic history. Her research examines how policy interventions affect bank survival and real economic activity.

Ribeiro constructed a comprehensive historical dataset by extracting and parsing 42,315 pages of biannual bank balance sheets across all Federal Reserve districts using OCR and LLM-based automation. The dataset contains more than 800,000 banking institutions, representing one of the most comprehensive banking datasets from the Depression era. It enables granular analysis of bank-level financial conditions during one of the most significant banking crises in U.S. history.

Before joining Quinlan, Ribeiro served as adjunct faculty at Golden Gate University, where she taught Principles of Economics. She remains a civil servant at the Central Bank of Brazil and has been on academic leave since 2019.
