Photos amid a pandemic

Taking a photojournalism class in the middle of a pandemic isn't an easy task.

Yet 18 Loyola School of Communication students did just that this past fall, producing some compelling images of life during COVID-19.

First, student patiently sat through remote classes taught by Chicago Tribune photojournalist Stacey Wescott, and recently-retired Tribune photojournalist Nancy Stone. Their students learned about ethics, camera use, technical skills, and most importantly how to communicate with the people in their photos.

Then, following safety and social-distancing guidelines, the students worked to complete their assignments.  They made stunning portraits, captured peak-action sports, learned to style and shoot food assignments, and created compelling photo-essays.

For their final project, the students each chose interesting themes, including some of the following: elections, protests, cemeteries, local businesses and street scenes.
