Lourdes Service Immersion
Our Lady of Lourdes Hospitality
Lourdes, France became famous in the 1850s after 14-year-old Bernadette Soubirous witnessed apparitions of the Virgin Mary. The vision instructed her to build a sanctuary and spread the word of the healing powers of the spring waters. Since then, as many as five million people pilgrimage to Lourdes every year to bathe in the spring waters.
This service immersion provides a sophomore, junior or senior nursing student with the opportunity to serve the sick from around the world who come to Lourdes to participate in the religious ritual of bathing in the healing waters of Lourdes. The focus of this service immersion is spiritual care.

Travel: All participants travel as a group. Airline arrangements are made by Campus Ministry. Typically the group departs Chicago for a flight to Paris, with a short layover in Paris. Following the layover, then there is a short flight from Paris to Pau where a chartered bus will then transport the group the 45 minutes to Lourdes.
Lodging: Hôtel Central, Lourdes, France
Food: Three meals a day are included with Lodging.
Length of time for trip: 11 days. Projected dates- May 22 to June 1, 2014
A typical schedule follows:
Friday Arrival in Lourdes, get acclimated
Saturday Free Day
Sunday International Mass; Check into the bathes for service.
Provide service for 6 days
Saturday Bus trip to Loyola Spain
Sunday Early departure for return flights to Chicago
This experience is a balance between service (baths, trains, processions), formation (Educational Sessions regarding serving in Lourdes) and prayer/spiritual practices (Mass, Adoration, Confession, Rosary, Candlelight Procession, and Eucharistic processions)
Cost to Student: $900.00
The fee that is paid by the student covers food, lodging and travel. The remainder of the cost of the trip is paid by contributions from the President’s Office of the university.
The student payments are due in three installments:
Friday, December 6, 2013 $300.00 is non-refundable deposit
Friday, February 7, 2013 $300 second payment
Friday, March 7, 2013 $300 third payment
There will be three meetings with the whole group who will be going on the service immersion during the spring semester prior to the departure date. The meeting dates and times will be established once all the participants have been selected.
In order to apply for the Lourdes Pilgrimage, nursing students need to submit the Lourdes Pilgrimage Application.

A twenty minute interview is required of all students. The anticipated date for interviews will be Friday, October 18 and 25, 2013.
The final selection of participants for the Lourdes trip will be made by the end of October. Those students selected for participation will be notified by email.
For those students that are accepted for participation on this trip to Lourdes, an initial deposit of $300 will be required as confirmation of participation by Friday, December 6, 2013. Payments can be made online (insert link) or by check that is submitted to the Campus Ministry, Damen Center, Room 217, Lake Shore Campus.
