The Department of Campus Safety is writing to inform you about an attempted armed robbery earlier this morning near the Lake Shore Campus.
On Saturday, October 24, at approximately 3:45 a.m., a Loyola student was walking eastbound on Albion Avenue, near Lakewood Avenue, when a male (the offender) approached the student from behind with an unknown object in his hand. He grabbed the student’s backpack and demanded a wallet. After a brief scuffle, the offender fled, eventually heading north on Sheridan Road.
The offender is described as: male, dark complexion, 25-30 years old, 6' 0”, 170-175 pounds, and short black hair. He was last seen wearing a gray-hooded sweatshirt, black sweat pants, and black gym shoes. He also has a gold tooth on the left side of his mouth.
Campus Safety is working closely with the Chicago Police Department on the investigation. If anyone has information on the incident above, please call Campus Safety at 773.508.SAFE or the Chicago Police Department at 312.744.8263.
Please also keep the following safety tips in mind:
- If a person threatens you with a weapon, follow their demands and run away as soon as it’s safe to do so. Once you are in a safe place, immediately notify Campus Safety or the Chicago Police Department.
- When walking alone, stay alert and tuned into your surroundings. Keep your eyes up and off of your phone, iPod, etc.
- Tell someone where you are going and when you will return. Also, when possible, please use the University's 8-RIDE program.
- Refrain from using headphones or talking on the phone, as this minimizes your ability to hear an approaching threat; it also advertises to a would-be thief that you may have a desirable item to steal.
- Walk or jog in well-lit areas and stay away from alleys.
Please immediately report any suspicious behavior or crimes to Campus Safety by calling 773.508.SAFE or the Chicago Police Department by calling 911.
Sincerely,
Joe Bogdalek
Deputy Chief, Campus Safety
