Professional Organizations/Conferences

The CELTS team is actively engaged in many professional organizations that promote engaged teaching and learning, engaged scholarship, community engagement, and campus and community relationships. Loyola faculty have access to many resources through these professional organizations, and in some cases, institutional membership.

Campus Compact 

Campus Compact empowers colleges and universities to advance their academic and civic missions by partnering with communities to address complex social issues and further equity, justice, and prosperity for all.

Campus Compact is a national nonprofit organization. We are the largest and oldest higher education association dedicated to higher education civic and community engagement. Our college and university members make up a force of thousands of presidents, faculty, researchers, students, and civic and community engagement experts at colleges and universities.

Coalition of Urban and Metropolitan Universities (CUMU)

The Coalition of Urban and Metropolitan Universities (CUMU) is an international affiliate organization of colleges and universities in metropolitan and urban areas that share common understandings of their institutional missions and values. Institutions located in urban and metropolitan areas often do not fit the model of more traditional colleges and universities. CUMU was formed in 1989 by leaders of metropolitan and urban institutions who realized their unique challenges and opportunities as they looked to the future of higher education. With its founding, CUMU took the lead in defining the concepts of university-community engagement and stewardship of place.

Community-Based Global Learning Collaborative

The Community-Based Global Learning Collaborative is a network of educational institutions and community organizations. The Collaborative advances community-based global learning and research for more just, inclusive, and sustainable communities. The Collaborative does this through several specific mechanisms: 

  • Interdependence: Global Solidarity and Local Actions – a new, growing, and adapting collection of online learning activities and critical civic tools designed to deepen college-level learners’ understanding of and engagement with ethical interdependence. The resources include tools that support ethical engagement across cultures and power differentials as learners, researchers, and organizers.
  • The Global Engagement Survey (GES), a multi-institutional study that examines the outcomes of high impact programming, such as engaged learning and study abroad, on local and global civic learning, cultural humility, and critical reflection
  • Mobilizing and disseminating Fair Trade Learning as a set of principles and practices that promote ethical community-campus partnership

Engaged Scholarship Consortium (ESC)

The Engagement Scholarship Consortium (ESC), a 501(c)(3) nonprofit educational organization, is composed of higher education member institutions, a mix of public and private colleges and universities. Our goal is to work collaboratively to build strong university-community partnerships anchored in the rigor of scholarship and designed to help build community capacity. Learn more about engaged scholarship here. The ESC traces its origins back to 2001 when Pennsylvania State University, Ohio State University, and the University of Wisconsin-Extension initiated an annual meeting to share knowledge about their community-based programs (the National Outreach Scholarship Conference). Since then, recognizing that multi-institutional efforts could help catalyze some of the changes they wanted for their own institutions, the three began formalizing their relationship and then began inviting other institutions to join them. The ESC has now articulated a broad scholarly agenda that includes:

  • Researching and studying the scholarship of engagement throughout the world.
  • Facilitating international cooperation among individuals interested in promoting conditions that bring about engaged scholarship as a criterion influencing higher education faculty performance evaluations.
  • Encouraging the realization that the scholarship of engagement is a critical aspect of university responsibility.
  • Promoting education, research, and study of the effects of engaged scholarship on community-campus partnerships.
  • Promoting research and study of the impacts of community-campus partnerships.
  • And many more . . .

International Association for Research on Service-Learning and Community Engagement (IARSLCE)

The mission of IARSLCE is to promote the development and dissemination of research on service-learning and community engagement internationally and across all levels of the education system.  For over twenty years, IARSLCE has been known to thousands of scholars as a network that consolidates the value of service-learning and community engagement (SLCE) for our understanding of the world and communities and has helped launch the scholarship of many brilliant publicly engaged researchers. IARSLCE is the only international organization whose expressed primary purpose is to cultivate, encourage, and present research across all engagement forms and educational levels. The Association promotes high quality trans-disciplinary research across a wide range of approaches and forms and builds the capacity of scholars, practitioners, and community partners to engage in such research.

Society for Experiential Education (SEE)

Founded in 1971, the Society for Experiential Education (SEE) is the premier, nonprofit membership organization composed of a global community of researchers, practitioners, and thought leaders who are committed to the establishment of effective methods of experiential education as fundamental to the development of the knowledge, skills and attitudes that empower learners and promote the common good. SEE sustains a great variety of experiential learning opportunities, such as internships, micro-experiences, service learning, global experience, and more. The Society’s vision is to expand the perspectives shared and voices heard throughout our growing profession so that they are representative of the practitioners and students in the field of experiential education.
