Graduate Students Host Fundraiser for Local Charity

Loyola Neighborhood News: Lake Shore Campus - V3, I8

The Graduate School Advisory Council held its second annual fundraiser on Friday, March 23, 2012. This year’s fundraising recipient was the Care for Real food pantry located in Edgewater. While last year, the fundraiser held a dance, this year, GSAC screened “The PHD Movie” which takes a humorous and poignant look at four graduate students as they grapple with research, being a teaching assistant and finding balance in their over-worked lives.

When asked why the movie format for the fundraiser, Timothy Hazen, GSAC president said, “We decided to show the PhD Movie because there was overwhelming interest from the student body to bring the film on campus. The comic strip is wonderfully done and the screening of the movie allowed students to take a brief break from their busy schedules and gave them an opportunity to laugh at the subtle absurdities that are often times associated with being a grad student.”

Admission to the movie was either two canned goods or $5. In addition, GSAC donated all the proceeds from the food concession to Care for Real. All in all, GSAC raised $131 at the event. Dean Attoh of The Graduate School agreed to match the funds with a total of $262 donated to the food pantry.

NaLette Brodnax, GSAC vice-president explains why GSAC chose Care for Real as this year’s recipient for its fundraiser. “We chose Care For Real as our fundraiser recipient because of the important work that they do for those closest to the Loyola community. With many Chicagoans out of work, provision of basic needs, such as food, has become really important for many families.”
