Visualizing Knowledge: BigDIVA and Humanities Research with Laura Mandell

Wednesday, October 10, 3-5 pm

Information Commons, 4th Floor

Laura Mandell will discuss the work of the Advanced Research Consortium to bring together open access and proprietary research materials for Humanities scholars in a visual interface designed for evoking new knowledge. This search and discovery tool is called the Big Data Infrastructure Visualization Application (http://www.bigdiva.org).

Mandell is a professor at Texas A&M University, in the English Department, as well as Director of the Initiative for Digital Humanities, Media, and Culture (IDHMC). She is the author of numerous publications and Director for the Advanced Research Consortium, which provides all the software and search engines used by the community of online finding aids started by Jerome McGann in 2004 as NINES. Like her search and discovery tool, the ARC community portals – NINES, MESA, Modernist Networks, and her own 18thConnect — are outward facing, attempting to engage various publics in curating historical materials and even creating their own digital editions.
