Purpose & Overview

Policy Purpose

The Digital Badging Program Governance Policy exists to provide the framework for the development, approval, design, and issuance of digital badges at Loyola University Chicago (LUC). Digital badges allow the university to recognize select achievements and accomplishments of our students, faculty, staff, community learners, and other stakeholders.

Digital badges are easily shared electronically via social media and other online platforms and allow recipients to showcase specific earned skills and accomplishments. Digital badges may be used in email signatures or digital resumes and provide learners with a way to display microcredentials in the same way that diplomas represent degrees. Digital badges contain verified metadata that describes the qualifications and the process required to earn the credential. The design and format of digital badges enables stakeholders to quickly view and understand what each digital badge represents.

Program Overview

Loyola University Chicago's Digital Badging Program recognizes and documents the formal and informal learning achievements of LUC students, faculty/staff, and other stakeholders beyond traditional academic transcripts and resumes. The program awards digital badges for the completion of select courses, sets of courses, certificate and degree programs, microcredential programs, student life co-curricular and extracurricular activities and achievements, and faculty/staff professional development completion

This governance plan outlines the structure, policies, and procedures that oversee the development, implementation, and management of the digital badging program. It establishes and defines the primary digital badge categories and badge levels used at LUC and it outlines the processes and criteria for developing new badges. Additionally, it provides information about the Digital Badge Review Committee, the group that provides oversight and governance for the digital badging program.

The program will begin as a year-long pilot initiative in AY 23-24 awarding digital badges for targeted non-credit academic student programs and faculty professional development completions. After the pilot year, the program will expand to award badges for the completion of additional academic non-credit programs; for-credit academic programming (courses, sets of courses, certificate programs, microcredentials); student life co-curricular/extracurricular activities and achievements; as well as additional faculty/staff professional development completions.
