Boston: Carbonite and Merrill Lynch

"We also did a case study session on Carbonite. We all thought that was a great way to learn more about the company and apply our skills into a real business case," said Jie Zheng (BBA '21).

In the morning, we visited Carbonite, an online data protection company. Their data backup service includes documents, emails, music, photo, and settings. When we first walked into their office, we found very interesting all the Star Wars designs in their office. The company’s name Carbonite is named after the fictional substance used to freeze Han Solo in Star Wars. It basically means “freeze” and backup your data. And, it’s very useful to learn and understand the difference between cyber security, storage, and data backup. We always worry about our front doors if anyone will break in and steal our things, but we forget about what we should do if someone already stole our things. Data backup service is like the insurance and protection for data. We also did a case study session on Carbonite. We all thought that was a great way to learn more about the company and apply our skills into a real business case. Also, thanks to our Loyola Alum Paul giving us this great opportunity to visit Carbonite and engage with all the great people who work there. We had a great time at Carbonite today!

In the afternoon, we visited Merrill Lynch with our host and Loyola alum Patrick. He gave us great advice on how to maximize our college time and resource. We also met with Alex and Dave. They showed us their diverse experience in three different stages of their careers at Merrill Lynch, like what their daily routines and schedules look like. They all gave us many tips on how to start our financial plans in our early age, which I found very useful for us. Also, Patrick got us some surprise cannolis for our visit today!

I truly appreciated that we have such a great alumni network to connect with our Loyola University Chicago & Quinlan School of Business. The Alumni Reception we had on Tuesday night also shows how many powerful and wide connections our school has. It was very inspiring to meet with the alumni and get career advice from them during this trip. I am so grateful to join this trip and to meet with everybody! I am looking forward to our last day of company visits tomorrow!
