Continuing Education

The School of Social Work offers post-graduation certification in advanced psychodynamic psychotherapy in partnership with the Institute for Advanced Psychotherapy. This program is a year-long commitment, designed for full-time, working professionals that provides licensed clinicians the training needed to expand and update clinical skills, enrich care provided to clients, and enhance one’s overall practice. The framework incorporates multiple theoretical disciplines and offers a method of case conceptualization that includes various listening and intervention techniques from a variety of treatment approaches.

Comprising three learning formats (on-site residency, virtual small-group consultation, and webinars) the program enables participants to continue their daily professional practices while earning this Advanced Psychotherapy Certificate. Time commitment is approximately 2.5 hours per week for the year. The certificate program offers 72 hours of Continuing Education credits for psychologists and 72 hours through IDFPR. New cohorts begin in late October/early November of each year.

Join us October 2 from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. for Suicide Prevention Training with internationally-renowned suicidologist and Loyola School of Social Work Professor Jonathan Singer, Ph.D. 

Suicide remains a major public health crisis, and social workers across micro, mezzo, and macro practice settings frequently serve as the primary link to support individuals in crisis. This three-hour webinar equips social workers with evidence-informed, compassionate, and actionable standards that reflect both the complexity of the suicidal experience and the best available knowledge on how to intervene effectively. Grounded in the core values of the social work profession, participants will learn how to integrate the person-in-environment perspective into suicide prevention, apply a six-step specialized practice framework for screening and assessment, and provide culturally responsive care to diverse populations.

Learning Objectives:

By the end of this three-hour webinar, participants will be able to:

1. Integrate core social work values and ethics into suicide prevention, assessment, and intervention practices.
2. Apply the six Specialized Practice Standards to identify and respond to suicide risk, including conducting initial screenings, formulating collaborative safety plans, and counseling on access to lethal means.
3. Adapt suicide-related care for diverse populations by recognizing the unique developmental, cultural, and contextual risk and protective factors that shape the experiences of the individuals and communities they serve.

Please join us September 19 from 9am-1pm at Heller Nature Center in Highland Park, IL for a unique continuing education opportunity! Barney Straus, LCSW will lead a group on the topic of "Using Adventure-Based Activities in Clinical Social Work" in one of the most interactive sessions of this series. 

At the end of this session, participants will be able to:

• Explain how to effectively incorporate novel activities within a variety of groups
• Describe how to use metaphoric transfer of learning to heighten the therapeutic impact of activities
• Select specific activities based on the group’s stage of development and primary purpose

Attendees will receive 4 CEUs for social work re-certification at the cost of $95 for the general public, $75 for Loyola alumni and internship supervisors, or $25 for students.
