Developing and Managing an International Career
In this one-day workshop we will discuss the best ways to prepare for and manage career transitions in a changing world. We will take a specific focus on careers in the international public sector, including fields such as rule of law, human rights, peace and security, and development.
Mobility has become a key feature of international careers, especially for young professionals. How can we manage our careers to benefit from this mobility, maximize our opportunities, and find long-term fulfillment in our working lives? What skills and expertise do we need to develop to ensure career success in the future, including the possibility of changing careers and adapting to new fields of work?
The workshop will address three key areas:
1. Preparing for an international career
In addition to academic qualifications, what are the best ways to create and enhance career opportunities at the international level? How do we network, search for jobs, and use internships, consultancies and other opportunities to the best effect? What skills and expertise are currently valued in international careers and what skills are likely to be valued in the future?
2. Developing career tools
What tools do we need to develop to be able to apply successfully for international jobs? In particular, what different formats and styles of CVs, online profiles and cover letters do we need to be prepared for? How do we evaluate our strengths and achievements and express them concisely in relation to particular jobs and career openings? What role does LinkedIn and social media play in finding job opportunities?
3. Preparing for interviews
What types of interviews can we expect in international recruitment and what are the best ways to prepare for them? How in particular do we prepare for competency-based interviews - the preferred interview format of the United Nations and many other organisations?
The workshop will be practical and interactive and all participants will be encouraged to reflect on their own career situations and to share their experiences.
