He is a registered professional forester (RPF) in Canada and has a Masters of Arts in Resource Geography. He lives in Haida Gwaii, a group of islands off the north coast of British Columbia, Canada the traditional un-ceded territory of the Haida Nation. He is a director of the Haida Enterprise Corporation, the business arm of the Haida Nation, and has been involved for many years in the co-management of lands and resources on Haida Gwaii where ownership of the land and jurisdiction over the resources is in dispute.
