Nicole Rangel

Associate Legal Officer at the International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia (ICTY)

Nicole Rangel (United States) is an international attorney with experience in international criminal law, human rights law – focusing on the establishment and protection of the rights of women and girls – and refugee and asylum law. As an international criminal attorney, Nicole has worked on all sides of the aisle, at both the trial and appellate level. Nicole has worked as an Associate Legal Officer for Judge Pocar of the ICTY Appeals Chamber; as an Associate Legal Officer at the ICTY and International Criminal Tribunal for Rwanda (ICTR) Appeals Chambers; as an Associate Appeals Counsel for the ICTR Office of the Prosecutor; and as a defense attorney for two defense teams at the ICTR.

Nicole is also passionately committed to advocating for those traditionally marginalized by existing legal regimes with a particular emphasis on representing immigrants, LGBT clients, and survivors of sexual and gender based violence. In this capacity, Nicole has worked for various international organizations providing assistance to refugees and asylum seekers. Nicole is also a Director of California Latinas for Reproductive Justice which advocates for the international implementation of reproductive justice.

Nicole holds a Bachelor of Arts in political science and global peace and security from the University of California Santa Barbara (United States), a Juris Doctor and international legal studies certificate from the University of the Pacific McGeorge School of Law (United States), and is a member of the California State Bar. Nicole has co-authored and published several articles on various topics in international criminal law including sexual violence crimes and joint criminal enterprise.
