Successful Student Profile #4

Drew

BEFORE LOYOLA

Drew is from a Southwestern suburb of Chicago. He has a twin brother who he was close with growing up. They attended the local high school together, which was racially quite diverse. His brother now attends Northern Illinois University. With this separation, Drew actually feels that he’s closer to his twin now than he was ever before. In high school, Drew played basketball and football. He chose to attend Loyola because of LUC’s reputation for having a great pre-med program. He also wanted to be relatively close to home, though he is glad that he didn’t just go to college where his friends went because he has really enjoyed making new friends. Drew goes home for a visit about once a month.

FIRST YEAR AT LUC

Drew lives in Simpson Living and Learning Center at Loyola. He really came to Loyola to expand his mind and he is motivated by the challenge he meets in his classes. He continues to play basketball in the gym with his friends, and plans to join an intramural team next year. He will also pledge a fraternity in the fall. He feels good about his decision to wait a while to get involved on campus because it allowed him to get acclimated to his academics and work out his time management. Drew acknowledges that his schedule may be different from other students, but he feels he has found a way to structure his time and his studying in a way that works well for him. Drew earned a cumulative GPA of 3.702 in his first year.

WORDS OF WISDOM

  1. “Be your own best influence.” This applies to a lot of things in college, but for Drew, he learned quickly to make choices that were most right for him without depending on the opinions of others. He found freedom in his ability to follow his own good advice in terms of making tough college choices.
  2. “Take advantage of office hours.” Drew has found that his professors are incredibly approachable and easy to talk to. He meets with his instructors when he has questions or when he just wants to talk further about an interesting topic from class.
  3. “Find your own routine.” It didn’t take long for Drew to figure out what class and study schedule would work well for him. He likes hanging out with his friends late into the night, and then he does his homework when the dorm is quite when other students are asleep.
