Finding a Deeper Connection of Heart and Seoul
While many students spend their summers working internships, traveling with friends, or taking classes on campus, School of Communication graduate student Mateusz Ofrecht chose to immerse himself in a different culture through a study abroad program in Seoul, South Korea. What began as an opportunity to return to a city they already loved became a transformative experience that deepened their understanding of global communication, strengthened their career aspirations, and created meaningful connections with local people.
"It might sound funny, but the other choice for studying abroad was Madrid, and as an international student from Europe, I decided Seoul was the way to go,” Ofrecht said. “I've been to Seoul before, and I absolutely loved my experience there, so I wanted to come back. This time, I hoped to interact more with locals and take a deeper dive into South Korean food that is less well-known."
That goal quickly became a reality. Rather than simply seeing the city's famous landmarks, the program created opportunities to build genuine connections with the people and culture.
"I think, for me, it was the ability to interact with locals. The last time I visited Seoul, I did not fully interact with locals or experience their culture. All the people we met, from our guest lecturers to tour guides, and even random people we met in the city, were so nice, helpful, and engaging in conversation."
From exploring historic sites to experiencing Korean cuisine together, Mateusz Ofrecht’s study abroad experience offered opportunities to connect with South Korean culture beyond the classroom.
Beyond the cultural experience, the program also reinforced the Ofrecht’s passion for marketing and strategic communication. Seeing South Korea's globally recognized marketing landscape firsthand brought classroom concepts to life.
"South Korea is a leader in global marketing, digital engagement, and setting trends for brands. It was a really eye-opening experience to see how advanced South Korean marketing is, and from this trip, I took away a lot of insights that would be really useful for marketing strategies in the US,” Ofrecht shared. "One of the most inspiring visits was our visit to HyperM, a public relations and digital marketing company. There, we met with the company's CEO as well as a few interns who, like myself, were from Europe. They all shared their stories of how they ended up at HyperM and gave us many insightful tips on choosing the right path, making connections, and searching for jobs."
The experience also broadened the Ofrecht’s perspective on how communication, business, and culture intersect on a global scale.
"It definitely gave me a different perspective on how a different, highly advanced country operates. From the work culture to marketing strategies and celebrity marketing, it inspired me even more on my path to becoming a strategic communicator and marketer. I will for sure use what I learned during my study abroad program further in my studies and in my professional career."
Study abroad took learning across Seoul as Mateusz and classmates connected with industry professionals, explored the city and experienced South Korea’s culture firsthand.
Looking back, the student has one clear message for others considering a global learning experience.
"Just do it. There's nothing better than traveling to a different country and experiencing the culture like a local. What you learn in school and online is totally different from what you experience in person, by visiting brands, talking to locals, and attending guest lectures. My experience was amazing, and I would definitely encourage everyone to do at least one study abroad program in their life."
And for anyone wondering what life outside the classroom is like in Seoul, the student offers one final endorsement.
"The social scene and nightlife go crazy! So much good music, food, and people with amazing energy. If this is something you enjoy, then that's another reason to do this program!"
