Course Title: Emotional Intelligence and Resilience

Prerequisite: Available to M2 students.
Special Note:

Part-time elective worth one week of credit. Intended to be taken by students in their M2 year.
Pass/Fail only.

Description:

This elective will focus on teaching Emotional Intelligence (EI) to help students develop strong communication skills and interpersonal skills. EI is a key component to establishing rapport and trust with patients, in addition to being a vital aspect of leadership development. The elective will further educate students on using EI skills to develop their own resilience in order to help reduce the risk of burnout. Specific EI-Resilience strategies will be discussed and students will explore ways to enhance their own well-being by utilizing these strategies.
The objective of this elective is:

- To understand the concept of Emotional Intelligence (EI) and the specific components of EI including self-awareness, self-management, social awareness, and social skill
- To discuss how EI can help you in the clinical setting and as a physician leader
- To outline strategies to improve your own EI level
- To recognize how EI skills can promote resilience by going through an EI-Resilience PROGRAM
- Positive thinking, Reframing, Optimism, Gratitude, Reflection, Altruism, Meaning
- To develop resilience by using the following EI-Resilience strategies:
- Social support, relationships, mentors
- Self-compassion, mindfulness

Method of Evaluation:

The grading will be pass/fail.  Students are expected to attend all six in-person/zoom sessions.  Students are expected to complete all assignments in a timely manner.  This elective includes lecture, discussions, reading assignments, online videos, daily entry into a gratitude log, weekly log of self-care activities, completing an online EI self-assessment, and several reflection writing assignments.  The course director will determine the final grade.
