Introduction

This catalog includes all approved undergraduate medical education at Stritch, Loyola University Health System, and affiliated hospitals. A maximum of 30 weeks of elective time are available, of which 22 weeks are required to fulfill the elective curriculum graduation requirement.

For information about extramural elective opportunities available through other medical schools and institutions, contact your faculty advisor, the Office of Student Affairs and/or faculty in areas of your interest. The national Extramural Elective Compendium contains information about opportunities through other medical schools; view it on the AAMC's website.

The elective curriculum gives students opportunities to select courses most suitable to their needs and interests and to:

  • gain broader experience and knowledge in clinical medicine
  • strengthen medical education in an area of special interest
  • test one's interest in a possible area of specialization
  • complete research projects or take advantage of opportunities for other special training
  • exercise responsibility and choice of self-determination of medical education content

We hope these options add to your education and to your interest in -- and excitement about -- a career in medicine.
