Thinking Theologically

All the degree programs offered by the Department of Theology, from undergraduate core classes to advanced Ph.D. seminars, are designed to provide students with the resources for analysis and investigation of the sources, historical development, and contemporary practices of religious traditions - principally the Roman Catholic tradition. Still, the best of contemporary Roman Catholic thought embraces dialogue with other Christian traditions, Judaism, Islam and eastern religions, and the diversity of our class offerings and faculty reflect this rich conversation.

Theological thinking seeks not only an understanding of the nature of religion. It also seeks an understanding of the relationship of the Christian tradition to a contemporary world where social, political, and economic structures are often unjust; where cultural shifts influence what and how people worship; and where scientific and technological advances pose new questions for human self-understanding. 

It is our firm belief that the study of theology is the cornerstone of a Jesuit education; it is the study that directly encourages our students to develop the Ignatian practice of seeing God in all things--which allows students to delve deeper in all their academic interests. We hope that our theology courses at Loyola make an indelible mark on our students, one that makes them people for and with others, long after they have graduated.
